Air fryer bacon takes 6 to 10 minutes at 400°F for thick cut slices and 5 to 7 minutes for regular cut, per Mississippi State University Extension’s air fryer chart, in a single layer, turned once. Our thick cut uncured bacon in 12 oz packs uses the thick line, and the doneness test is the crispness you want, which USDA says is what sets bacon cooking time.
Below are the recipe as a checklist, the chart with its source, why an air fryer smokes with bacon and what the extension page says to do about it, and what to do with the cooked slices. No time here is ours; the minutes are Mississippi State’s and the crispness rule is USDA’s.

Air fryer bacon recipe: thick cut, 400°F, 6 to 10 minutes
The method follows Mississippi State University Extension’s Nutrition and Wellness: All about Air Fryers (publication P3577): its chart lists bacon (thick) at 400°F for 6 to 10 minutes, and its tips say to preheat, not overfill the basket, and turn or shake food at least once. One ingredient: as many slices of our thick cut bacon as fit in one layer, which is one batch; a 12 oz pack takes more than one batch in most baskets. The recipe card counts one batch: about 5 minutes to lay out the slices (our estimate, stated as such) and the chart’s 6 to 10 minutes.
- Preheat the air fryer to 400°F. The extension page says to preheat so food cooks evenly.
- Lay the slices in the basket in a single layer, not overlapping. Do not overfill; cook a second batch instead.
- Cook 6 to 10 minutes for thick cut (5 to 7 for regular cut), turning the slices once partway through.
- Check at the low end of the range. Cook the bacon through, then to the crispness you want; USDA says the cooking time depends on thickness, heat, and desired crispness, so the range is the guide and the slices are the check.
- Move the slices to a paper towel lined plate. Empty the grease from the drawer before the next batch.
The extension chart carries its own caution: “You may need to adjust cooking times and temperatures based on the size of the food and your air fryer’s cooking suggestions.” Air fryers vary, so treat 6 minutes as the first look, not the finish.

| Bacon | Temperature | Time | Done when | Source |
|---|---|---|---|---|

| Thick cut (ours) | 400°F | 6 to 10 minutes | Crispness you want | Mississippi State Extension chart; USDA |

USDA’s bacon and food safety page is where the doneness rule comes from: “The length of time to cook bacon depends upon the type and thickness of the bacon, the heat used and the desired crispness.” That is why the chart gives a range and not a number, and why we did the same in bacon in the oven.
What thick cut means on our label, and why the thick line is the one to use, is in thick cut bacon. The 12 oz pack is the easy size for an air fryer basket; the 2.25 lb packs cook the same way in more batches.
Why the air fryer smokes with bacon, and what the extension page says to do
Bacon renders fat, and the fat lands in the drawer under a 400°F element. The Mississippi State page says: “White smoke may mean there is too much fat in the food. Make sure the oil collection pan does not have excess oil/fat.” Its other tip is to “add water or a slice of bread to the drawer of the air fryer to prevent smoking.”
So: empty the drawer between batches, and put a little water or a slice of bread in the drawer under the basket if your machine smokes. Both are the extension page’s tips, not ours. Keep 5 inches of clear space behind the air fryer for air flow, another of its rules.
Draining, storing, and reheating cooked bacon
Drain on paper towels. USDA’s table gives cooked bacon 4 to 5 days in the refrigerator and 1 month in the freezer, and the extension page says leftovers reheat well in an air fryer because it crisps them. Bacon cooked on a Sunday is inside USDA’s 4 to 5 day window through Thursday.
Clean the basket after each use, by hand in warm soapy water, per the extension page, and skip store bought nonstick sprays, which it says can damage the basket. Our older post on the artisanal bacon experience has more ways to use the slices once they are cooked.
Questions people ask about air fryer bacon
How long does it take for bacon to cook in an air fryer?
Per Mississippi State Extension’s chart, 5 to 7 minutes at 400°F for regular cut and 6 to 10 minutes for thick cut, turned once. Check at the low end; the finish is the crispness you want.
Can I air fry bacon at 400 degrees?
Yes; 400°F is the temperature the extension chart lists for both regular and thick bacon.
Why not cook bacon in an air fryer?
The usual objection is smoke from rendered fat. The extension page’s fixes are to keep the drip pan free of excess fat and to add water or a slice of bread to the drawer.
What are some common mistakes when air frying bacon?
From the extension page’s tips: not preheating, overfilling the basket, not turning the food at least once, and leaving fat in the drawer. From USDA: cooking to a clock instead of to crispness.
400°F, one layer, turn once, 6 to 10 minutes for thick cut. That is air fryer bacon by the extension chart, and our thick cut slices use the thick line.
