The short answer on how much ham per person
These are purchased weights, bone included. A bone-in ham loses weight to the bone, so you buy more per person than with boneless. Half a pound bone-in per adult gives a full holiday plate.
Our package counts servings differently: about five 3 ounce servings per pound of ham. That is a buffet or sandwich portion. A holiday plate is closer to two of those, so the half pound rule and the package figure agree once you allow for the bone.
Kids eat about half that. For leftovers, add about a quarter pound per adult. When in doubt, round up; leftover ham is never a problem.
One more thing: a spiral ham is already sliced, so portions are even from the first plate to the last, which makes the count easier to trust.
Ham per person by guest count (bone-in spiral ham)
| Adults at the table | Ham as the only main (1/2 lb each) | Ham with other mains (1/3 lb each) | Only main plus leftovers (3/4 lb each) |
|---|---|---|---|
| 4 | 2 lb | 1.5 lb | 3 lb |
| 6 | 3 lb | 2 lb | 4.5 lb |
| 8 | 4 lb | 3 lb | 6 lb |
| 10 | 5 lb | 3.5 lb | 7.5 lb |
| 12 | 6 lb | 4 lb | 9 lb |
| 16 | 8 lb | 5.5 lb | 12 lb (two hams) |
| 20 | 10 lb | 7 lb | 15 lb (two hams) |
All figures are purchased bone-in weight: half a pound per adult as the main, a third with other mains, and three quarters when you want leftovers. Count children as half an adult. Our hams run 6 to 10 pounds each, so one ham covers most tables and two cover a big one.
Which size of our ham to order
Each ham is one piece, 6 to 10 pounds, and we cannot promise an exact weight. By the half pound rule, a 6 pound ham feeds 12 adults as the main and a 10 pound ham feeds 20. For a family of six with leftovers (4.5 lb), any ham in the range works.
For a crowd of 16 or more, order two. Two hams also mean one can go in the oven while the other stays cold for a lunch spread, and leftover ham freezes well in small packs.
The ham is uncured, fully cooked, and slow smoked over real applewood, from Heritage Duroc hogs raised crate free and antibiotic free on family farms. It comes with an optional honey glaze packet. The product page makes no organic claim, and neither do we.
Easter timeline: order, thaw, heat
- Two to three weeks out: order. Orders placed Tuesday through Friday arrive the following Friday, Saturday, or Sunday, frozen with dry ice. Holiday weeks can shift that, so check the shipping page and order early.
- On arrival: freezer. Move the ham to the freezer the day it lands unless Easter is within the week, in which case the fridge is fine.
- Wednesday before Easter: thaw. Move it to the fridge. Allow about 24 hours for every 4 to 5 pounds, so a 10 pound ham needs two to three days. A thawed, fully cooked sliced ham keeps 3 to 5 days in the fridge, per the USDA hams and food safety page.
- Easter morning: heat. 325°F, glaze applied, covered with foil, about 10 minutes per pound to about 135°F. The full method is in how to cook a spiral ham.
- Or skip the oven. The ham is fully cooked and can be served cold, which is the easiest Easter lunch there is.
If the ham arrives the week of Easter, skip the freezer and thaw straight in the fridge. For sides and pairings by season, see our guide to heritage pork for every time of year.
Questions people ask about how much ham to buy
How many people will a 10 lb ham feed?
About 20 adults as the only main at half a pound each, or about 13 adults with leftovers. On a buffet the package counts about 50 three ounce servings.
How many people can eat a 4 lb ham?
About 8 adults as the main at half a pound each, or 12 with other dishes. Our hams start at 6 pounds, so a 4 pound ham would be a smaller ham from elsewhere.
How much sliced ham do I need for 20 people?
About 10 pounds bone-in as the main, 7 pounds with other mains, or 15 pounds with leftovers. One 10 pound spiral ham, or two smaller ones, covers it.
How long should a 5 lb ham be cooked?
A fully cooked spiral ham only needs warming: about 10 minutes per pound at 325°F covered, so about 50 minutes for 5 pounds, to about 135°F at the center.
Count the chairs, then check the ham. How much ham per person is the easy part once you know the half pound rule and the 6 to 10 pound range. Ours is Heritage Duroc, applewood smoked, and ready to serve, and it sells out around the holidays.
