Best Bacon Brands Worth Gifting This Father’s Day

The best bacon brands each answer the same five questions on their own label and website: what the hogs were, what is in the cure, what wood did the smoking, how thick the slice is, and how the bacon reaches you. Below are seven brands, ours among them, compared on those five points using only what each brand says about itself.

We do not rank them, because taste is yours to judge and we have not run a blind test. We do think our America’s Best Uncured Bacon makes a good Father’s Day gift, and the table shows why in the same terms we use for everyone else.

What separates the best bacon brands: five questions

  1. The hogs. Does the brand name a breed, or say how the animals were raised? Many packs say “pork” and stop.
  2. The cure. Read the ingredient statement. Some brands cure with salt, sugar, and sodium nitrite; “uncured” brands use celery powder instead of added nitrite, and the label must say so.
  3. The smoke. Look for a process statement from the producer, such as “smoked over applewood logs” or “smoked over hickory wood chips.” A flavor name alone does not tell you how the bacon was smoked.
  4. The slice. Thick cut, regular, or center cut. Pick for how you cook.
  5. The shipping. Bacon is perishable. USDA’s guidance for mail order meat is that it should arrive frozen or at least refrigerator cold, packed with a cold source.

Notes on each brand

Applegate is the grocery store uncured option with the clearest raising claims on its page: no antibiotics ever and its own humane raising standard. Benton’s and Broadbent are the Southern country bacons: dry cured, aged, hickory smoked, and saltier than the rest by design, which Broadbent says outright.

Niman Ranch and Nueske’s are both applewood houses. Niman’s cure list matches ours almost word for word; Nueske’s describes smoking over applewood log embers. Wright Brand is the thick cut supermarket standard, smoked over hickory or apple wood chips.

Vande Rose Farms is the one on this list that names the breed. Everything else in our row is on the product page or our shipping page: Heritage Duroc, a four ingredient cure, applewood smoke, thick cut, shipped frozen with dry ice. “America’s Best” is the product’s name; whether it is your best is your call.

Gifting bacon for Father’s Day

Our shipping page sets the timing: orders placed Tuesday through Friday ship to arrive the following Friday, Saturday, or Sunday, and holiday weeks can shift that. Count back from the weekend you want and check the shipping page for the current week’s cutoff.

You can ship to his address instead of yours at checkout, and there is a gift message field of up to 120 characters. Packages are left at the door with no signature, so tell him to expect it.

Which pack? The 2.25 lb packages suit a dad who cooks bacon every weekend, and the 12 oz packages are easier to thaw one at a time. Everything we make is in the bacon category.

Questions people ask about the best bacon brands

How do you read a bacon label?

Start with the ingredient statement, then look for the smoke process, the slice, and any breed or raising claim. Per the USDA bacon page, bacon made without added nitrite must be labeled “Uncured Bacon, No Nitrates or Nitrites added,” and nitrate is prohibited in all bacon.

How can you tell how a bacon was smoked?

Look for the producer’s own process statement, like the quotes in the table. “Smoke flavor” in the ingredient list means a flavoring was added; a flavor name on the front does not by itself tell you the method.

What is the difference between cured, uncured, and dry cured bacon?

Cured bacon uses added sodium nitrite. Uncured bacon uses a natural source like celery powder and carries the USDA label wording above. Dry cured means the cure was rubbed on rather than injected, and USDA lists a longer fridge life for it.

Which bacon brand is best for a gift?

One that ships frozen with a cold source, tells you how it was made, and lets you send a gift message. Ours does all three; the table lets you compare the rest on the same points.

Give the bacon you would want. The best bacon brands earn it on the label, one line at a time, and ours is ready to check: Heritage Duroc, applewood smoke, a four ingredient cure, thick cut, shipped frozen to his door.
